Cafe de Keerweer Rotterdam Cafe de Keerweer Rotterdam Vera Bos

You haven’t really experienced gay night life in Rotterdam without having been to the Keerweer! For years Café de Keerweer – named after the street the cafe is situated on - has been one of the most well-known gay bars of Rotterdam. Although the Keerweer opens its doors as early as 16.00 the fun really starts after midnight.

All of Rotterdam gravitates towards the Keerweer in the wee hours. Mainly due to the fact that it is opened until the early morning (6 AM). Which means that the crowd is made up of people from all different walks of life: gay people (mainly older gentlemen), hospitality industry staff and other party people who aren’t quite ready to go home yet. It gets ‘sticky’ – for lack of a better word – at some point during the good-natured hustle and bustle due to the relatively limited amount of room inside the cafe. The music and dance floor at the Keerweer are a welcoming sight and sound for guys and girls who want to dance (what’s left of) the night away. Anyone who just wants to lounge at the bar with a drink is also more than welcome. And if you’re looking for someone to spend the rest of the night with, de Keerweer is a fine place to explore your options. So, for those of you not partied out yet after a night out on the town: Keerweer is here for you. Oh and don’t be deterred by a closed door. At night the entrance is through the back door.

Keerweer parade

Café de Keerweer partakes in an annual street party: de Keerweer Parade. The entire street is transformed into one big festival ground with a large stage at its centre that hosts a string of mainly Dutch artists. For three days – during King’s Day and Rotterdam Pride – the parade is a Mecca for fans of the ‘Levenslied’ (Dutch version of the chanson). During the parade you can also enjoy performances by drag queens while you feast your eyes on scantily clad male dancers. The ambience can best be described as pleasant and the crowd is quite diverse (LGBTQ and hetero).
