The center of Rotterdam is compact and can easily be explored by foot or by bike. Furthermore Rotterdam has various means of public transport, like tramway, bus and underground rail.
Travelling to Rotterdam:
Rotterdam -The Hague Airport is a regional one that connects Rotterdam with main European cities. From this airport there is a regular bus service to Rotterdam Central Station with line 33. The price of a taxi to the center of Rotterdam is approximately €25,-.
Schiphol airport is one of the largest in Europe and connects Rotterdam with the whole world. From this airport the fast 'Intercity Direct' train will take you every 15 minutes within 30 minutes to Rotterdam Central Station. The ticket price is € 14.30, including the fast train surcharge.
From Rotterdam one can travel with high speed train connections to Paris and Brussels (Thalys) and Breda and Amsterdam (Intercity Direct). In addition to this Rotterdam Central Station is well connected with all major Dutch cities.
If you travel by car then keep account of the fact that throughout the whole center parking fees are charged. If you want to stay for a longer period and if you abstain from using the car, then parking on one of the P&R locations is advisable. For parking in the center you might use one of the parking garages
In Rotterdam there are various underground lines, tramways and bus (and water-bus) lines that can take you to any spot in city and region. Plan your travel in advance via www.ret.nl, or with the site (working on national level) www.ov9292.nl (or the ov9292 app for smart phones). This helps you to travel by public transport from A to any B in the Netherlands.
In order to use public transport you need an "OV-chipkaart". You can buy these at train stations, at a RET-sales point (www.ret.nl) and at underground stations (through the purchasing machines). You can also purchase them in supermarkets and tobacco-stores. The card cannot be bought in bus, tramway or metro. However, in bus and tramway single fare tickets can be purchased (with or without transfer option). By the way: the card is national, and has to be charged. Minimum money level on the card should be €4 (€ 20 for use on trains). One needs to check in when boarding and check out when leaving the means of transport or the stations (trains and underground). For first time use on trains you need to activate the card at a train station (this in order to choose the class you wish to travel).
You will find taxi's at the central station and at certain other locations in the center. Taxi's cannot be flagged and they always use a meter. For a trip in the center approximately €10 will be charged, depending on the exact destination, hour, and traffic situation. Do always ask the driver for information before boarding. The two largest taxi organizations in Rotterdam are St. Job Taxi and the Rotterdamse Taxi Centrale RTC.
Bikes can be rented at various locations in the center, including the Central Station. Various hotels do also provide bikes to guests. Rotterdam Urbanguides (www.urbanguides.nl/) organizes guided biking tours; a good manner to quickly get acquainted with the city.
Unique in Rotterdam is that practically all spots along the river are easily reached by the Water Taxi. A splendid manner to see the city and its skyline from the water.
