Events and nightlife

by Alex van Hulst

Also during the days that Rotterdam still dominated the wrong lists, the city was already leading in the field of large events. In the year 2016 the city still has a huge attraction with renown events like North Sea Jazz, the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), the Summer Carnival, the ABNAMRO World Tennis Tournament, the Parade, and Museumnight010. But also less well known festivals like Motel Mozambique, the Amateur Theatre Festival Rotterdam and the Crazy Sexy Cool Festival are very worthwhile to visit. An comprehensive festival calendar can be found on

Museums and exhibitions
Lovers of museums and exhibitions can indulge themselves in Rotterdam. The Kunsthal (art hall), Boymans van Beuningen, Het Nieuwe Instituut (the New institute) and the Wereldmuseum (World Museum) have for years been associated with Rotterdam. But, take a look as well into Fotomuseum (National Photo Museum) ont the Wilheminapier, the Chabot Museum at the Museumpark or the Maritiem Museum (Maritime Museum) on Churcillplein.

The nightlife of Rotterdam is mainly concentrated in and around the centre. For movie and theater lovers the surroundings of the Schouwburgplein host several cinemas and theaters. The Doelen, the Oude Luxor and Rotterdamse Schouwburg (Rotterdam theatre) offer a variety of cultural performances. Pathé on the Schouwburgplein daily shows the newest blockbusters and in Cinerama on the Westblaak one finds the just less renown movies.

The Schouwburgplein offers various theatres and moviecenters. Mouse-over: The North Sea Jassfestival, a annual happening for jazz lovers.

Right across the Bridge the Nieuwe Luxor offers large theater performances and cultural happenings and Lantaren Venster shows modern and less modern movies. The largest cinema is located near the Feyenoord stadium 'on' South: Pathé de Kuip It has 14 stages and 3,000 seats.

Also dance and music lovers can get more than satisfied in Rotterdam. The city hosts various music stages and discotheques, where large as well as smaller parties are organised. For the actual offer of parties do consult DJGuide.

All through the city you will find nice terraces and bars/cafés, but very recommended to visit are the Oude Haven (old harbour) area and the Witte de Withstraat, where - during summertime - it is lovely to stay. In all cases it is advised: an evening of nightlife in Rotterdam? Then first check the Uitagenda.
